a few nature zines from my nature journaling class
chelsea is better at drawing than me
prescript:
NEXT FRIDAY i’m doing a book signing and bird walk at books are magic, august 15, 6pm. we’ll start at the shop then walk over to brooklyn bridge park. register here!
the shorebird festival at jamaica bay wildlife refuge is next weekend, 8/17 from 10am to 1pm. i might be leading a tour there but not sure yet—keep your eyes open on my social media. you should come regardless.
probably last reminder! i’m co-facilitating jer thorp’s binoculars to binomials retreat in santa marta, colombia. september 11 to september 16—it’s an immersive experience where we’ll use birding as one of several tools to understand the natural world, with the goal of creating a collaborative data art piece in the style of jer’s 2017 work ‘in the map room.’ learn more here!!!
i have a bunch of walks coming up in the fall, will hopefully have my full schedule ready by the next newsletter.

last weekend chelsea beck and i led a nature journaling class in prospect park for the lofty pigeon bookstore. it was one of my favorite events i’ve ever done! ~30 people came and i wish i could share some of their work because they made some great zines. instead, you can look at one of chelsea’s zines and three of mine. i thought you would all enjoy the sillier and/or more personal content this week.
also, ugh, i tested this in the substack preview and it looked fine but then it looks stupid in the email. sorry about that. it seems to look ok on the mobile site.

above are the ones we drew at the event itself. scribble is chelsea’s adorable dog.

i drew this one at the coffee shop while we were finalizing our plants for the class.

and i felt kind of inspired by this damselfly that landed on me while i was walking home from the event.

postscript: it’s hard to do alt text with the galleries. if you need it, just reply to the email and i’ll write you some.
here’s the little gull my friends and i found in the rockaways a few weeks ago. it’s a rare bird in nyc and in north america overall. it’s also the smallest gull species. it was kinda shy when we first found it but then settled in for a few weeks before moving on. while it was visiting, it displayed extreme ire toward the piping plovers.
